Black and White Restoration & Archival Printing

emember the detail you saw in photographic art books - especially the famous Karsh portraits? Remember the detail, the subtlety of tone?

Well, such photographs can still be produced. We do it every day!

At Walter Psotka Photography, we do it with our black & white executive portraits and with our restoration work. We use materials similar to those used in the 1940's and 1950's. We use the same retouching techniques as the famous Hollywood photographers who made the stars look so glamorous and flaw-free.

What difference does the reproduction process make?

Maybe you have noticed, as we have, a lot of badly reproduced photographs in special exhibits of cultural heritage and commercial, industrial, or historical development. The original photographs no doubt had a lot of rich detail and were probably brown-toned prints - sometimes with some damage or other problem.

The reproductions often have harsh black and white presentations, due to the fact that they were reproduced on a graphic arts-type material that doesn't allow for subtlety of detail and faithful "photographic" reproduction. Often these images are "halftone" screened to facilitate reproduction, and the dot matrix pattern is usually very prominent. You see a graphic "posterized" effect, but you miss the subtlety of detail inherent in the actual photograph.
